Develop essential maths skills for work, study and everyday life

This nationally recognised NCFE qualification helps you develop the mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills needed for employment, further education and everyday situations.

You will learn how to identify mathematical problems, choose suitable methods, complete calculations and explain your results clearly.

What does the qualification cover?

The course develops practical skills including:

  • Reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers up to one million

  • Working with positive and negative numbers

  • Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000

  • Using multiplication and division facts

  • Following the correct order of mathematical operations

  • Using simple formulae

  • Working with fractions and mixed numbers

  • Reading, writing and calculating with decimals

  • Rounding and estimating answers

  • Working with percentages

  • Understanding relationships between fractions, decimals and percentages

  • Using simple ratios and direct proportion

  • Calculating discounts and simple interest

  • Converting between common units of measurement

  • Calculating area, perimeter and volume

  • Understanding angles, symmetry and two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes

  • Reading scales on maps and drawings

  • Presenting and interpreting information using tables, charts and graphs

  • Calculating the mean and range

  • Understanding and calculating simple probability

Online learning through NCFE Skills Builder

Your learning is delivered online through NCFE Skills Builder as part of our FAST approach — Functional Assessment and Skills Together.

At the beginning of the course, you will complete an initial assessment and diagnostic activities to identify your current level and the areas on which you should focus.

You will then have access to:

  • Video tutorials and online learning resources

  • Activities targeted to your development needs

  • Practice questions and assessment preparation

  • Progress information to help you see how you are developing

  • A learning platform available 24 hours a day

You can work through the course flexibly over four months, allowing you to fit your studies around work, family and other commitments.

How is the qualification assessed?

The qualification is assessed through one externally assessed mathematics examination divided into two sections:

  • Section A: non-calculator

  • Section B: calculator

Your examination can be arranged in person or online, subject to the required assessment and invigilation arrangements. Remote assessment may also be available where the relevant NCFE requirements are met.

The £250 course fee includes one examination attempt. If you do not pass on your first attempt, resits are available and are charged separately.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements and you do not need to hold a previous maths qualification.

Your initial assessment will help confirm that Level 1 is the appropriate starting point for you. Learners who are not yet ready for this level may be advised to begin with an Entry Level qualification.
